when my husband and I married, my best friend was less than impressed.

Don’t get me wrong – she loves Bearhands, but she thought that two keen cooks marrying each other was a waste.  She’d spent her adult life sustained on toast and takeaway, then married a bloke who couldn’t boil water and found herself cooking every night. The thought of two capable cooks in the same household seemed excessive.

This recipe is a Bearhands special.  It’s simple, entirely devoid of superfoods and super satisfying.  I’ve come to love this dish – not only is it delicious, it means I’ve got the night off!SAUSAGES IN TOMATO AND ONION GRAVY SOCIAL-2

Ingredients:

  • 6 thick pork sausages – don’t skimp here, buy the best snags you can.
  • 400g tin chopped tomatoes
  • 2 brown onions
  • 1/2 can water
  • 1 heaped teaspoon plain flour

Method:

Brown the sausages in a large saucepan. Slice the onion finely.  Once the sausages are almost cooked through, remove them from the pan and saute the onion in the pan for a few minutes.  Add the tomato puree, then fill the tin halfway with water and add it to the tomato and onion gravy.  Then add a heaped teaspoon of plain flour, stir and simmer for five minutes.

Return the sausages to the pan and simmer for a further five minutes.

Serve with mashed potatoes. I like sweet potato mash but Bearhands is a puritan and believes that traditional potato mash is the superior accompaniment for sausages.  Whichever way, it’s delicious!

My hubby LOVES sausages this way but rarely gets it as the kids are so fussy! I do wonder if you’re not doing it the right way eating after them! x

Now that the mercury is dropping, I love a winter warmer like this! It looks snagtastic!

Growing up I used to have a mix like this on toast (sometimes with an egg) but always with gravox instead of flour – still one of my favourites!

I reckon Bearhands would love the Gravox addition, thanks Stacey. x
