Bearhands comes from a fairly distinguished rugby league background.

In fact, I can have a particularly ill-timed (or well-timed) case the mumps to thank for Bearhands becoming a farmer instead of a footballer. If it weren’t for him being pretty crook during his trial for a major NRL team, I have no doubt he’d be married to a lovely cheerleader and delivering commentary on one of those terrible footy shows that I can’t bring myself to watch. I lack the perkiness (both physically and spiritually) to be a cheerleader, so lets take a collective moment of thanks for the role that epidemic parotitis played in my future happiness.

Footy is big in our house and tonight we’ll be hosting a dozen odd friends in the shed to watch the State of Origin decider. Bearhands’ uncle is part of the coaching staff, so we’re doublely invested in a Queensland win.

We can’t be certain of the outcome tonight. It is, after all, a game of two halves. But regardless of who are the better team on the paddock, I know food will be the winner.

If you’re entertaining tonight, here are eleven fabulous recipes for food for football fans from some of my favourite Aussie bloggers.

Bacon and cheese cobb loaf

This gooey deliciousness is courtesy of Create Bake Make.

Teppanyaki Rolls

These teppanyaki rolls are delicious (and a slightly healthier option)

There’s burgers and there’s burgers, and this one from Not Quite Nigella is a BURGER!

Pies and cheerios dipped in homemade tomato sauce

Some puritan footy fans insist on sauce that comes in a squeeze bottle, but I love this homemade version.

HOMEMADE-4

BBQ pulled pork buns

This slow cooked BBQ pork recipe from The Wild Hideaway would distract even the most ardent footy fan from the game!

Cheesy sardine fingers

Don’t knock em till you’ve tried em – these cheesy sardine fingers are the business.

Wow! What a fantastic feast! I am drooling over that burger & pizza pockets always make me hungry!

I can’t claim to know anything about the rugby league, partly being a southerner & mostly being extremely unsporty in any way, but I do know food & would happily sit amongst all the cheering to quietly scoff everything on offer.

Thanks for including my recipe! I hope the game goes in your favour. xx

We’ll be at the game tonight, first one in 15 years, and I am sure that their food won’t be anything like this!
